Hiking
There
are
a few trails in the general vicinity of Alderwood Retreat. The closest
one is an animal trail that runs west along the bluff from the lodge to
a nearby beach. This is an easy hike through an untouched forest of
Sitka Spruce.
Another
moderate hike takes us up an old road to a lake where Hunter
and one brave young man braved the elements and took a very brief dip
before the fog rolled in and we headed home.
For those
who'd like a more
strenuous climb, the face of Kupreanoff presents quite a challenge. A
larger lake is accessible from the lagoon in the head of Dry Spruce
Bay, but requires a full day to hike in and back out again. One way or
another, those who want to experience Kodiak from the perspective of
their waffle-stompers will be completely satisfied...just remember to
bring your bug spray!
