Halibut aren't pretty closeup, but they sure are tasty!

                                       Fishing

World-class fishing may be found in the waters surrounding Kodiak Island. In fact, there was a 196 lb.
halibut caught just a stone's throw off our beach last summer!! King Salmon swim past our lodge from May through September. Pink Salmon ("Humpies") start swimming along Kodiak's coastline in mid- to late July, and you can catch Rainbow Trout & Dolly Varden in some of our local rivers from early summer into the fall. Coho (Silver Salmon) are abundant from early August till early September.

Gear to Bring

Because the weather in Kodiak frequently defies predictions and can change quite rapidly, it is always wise to dress in layers.  Items you may want to consider bringing are:

  • Hooded sweatshirts

  • Hiking boots

  • Sneakers, for walking around camp/your cabin

  • Hat & lightweight gloves for breezy days on deck

  • Photography equipment & plenty of film/memory cards

  • Binoculars

  • Swimming suit for the banya

We will provide all necessary spinning gear & halibut gear. We also provide all boots and raingear, just be sure to give us a list of your party's sizes ahead of time. We do not have any fly-fishing gear, as there are no freshwater systems near us; however, fly-out fly fishing trips can be arranged, with or without guides.

Upon making a deposit & receiving confirmation of your trip, we then advise that you contact one of the air taxi services listed on our "Rates" page, who will be more than happy to arrange your flight out to Alderwood Retreat. We would greatly encourage you to plan a bear-viewing trip in conjunction with your flight. After all, when will you have another opportunity to see the incredible Kodiak Brown Bear in its natural environment?

Time slots are limited and fill up fast, so call to reserve your block today! Your trip to Kodiak Island will be something you remember and talk about for the rest of your life...

Commercial salmon fishing several years back yielded big, beautiful Silvers like this one.

The whales were a rush! I also caught the biggest fish of my life.

Kodiak's limit for halibut is still two per person per day.

The view from our fish cleaning station is phenomenal.

On Jack's birthday we limited out on Silvers within about two hours!

The record halibut for our lodge so far was 325 pounds.

My mom grins from ear to ear as she reels in her halibut.
