A family adventure vacation at Alderwood Retreat can include fishing for salmon and halibut.

Family Fun!

We are very excited to add a new activity to the already amazing repertoire at Alderwood:  Geocaching!!  Using GPSs, we can divide into teams or go as one group on a search to find the treasures & trinkets hidden at the recorded coordinates.  This is a great skill to learn that you and your family can continue upon your return home.

Geocaching is fun for the whole family! Click here to visit the official Geocaching website to learn more about this fun hobby, and to look up caches hidden near you!!

The Kincaid family visited Alderwood Retreat in 2005. Big brother Jacob is seen at the top of the page reeling in his first halibut with the help of Captain Stan. Mom Kincaid and little brother Isaac (& Hunter) wait to see what surfaces.

Look! The moon is out in the middle of the day!

Papa Kincaid and middle brother Joseph are tidepooling while Sheba, their furry child, keeps close watch. At Alderwood Retreat the four-legged members are as welcome as the rest of the family.

Kayaking is fun for kids and dogs alike! Desiree and Kovu enjoyed touring the coastline in our super-stable recreational kayaks.

Vince and his daughter relax and take in the scenery on their marine tour. Newman lies at their feet waiting for our return to the beach. Your "fur-babies" are a welcome part of your family vacation.

Kayaking is a wonderful way to tour the Litnik River on Afognak Island.

With the Moore family, we kayaked up
a river to look at a salmon weir.

My son is a bit large for piggyback rides!
When the river got too shallow to paddle any further, I had to help Dylan get to the bank. (He didn’t wear his boots!)

Commercial salmon fishing is regulated by the counts at local fish weirs.
The weir channels the salmon through a narrow passageway allowing local Fish and Game employees to count how many salmon have successfully returned to their spawning grounds. This can offer opportunity to view Kodiak bear as they feed.

Similar to Hawaii's Kahlua Pig, salmon can be buried in the sand on a bed of hot coals.

A salmon bake on the beach was a relaxing way to end the day for the Moeller family reunion.

Sockeye salmon has such beautiful red meat that they are commonly called "Reds."Your family can catch salmon and grill it up on the beach the same day, or kayak around a nearby island and stop for a picnic on a beach along the way. Or both! However you choose to spend your time, we know you’ll enjoy having spent your family vacation with us here at Alderwood Retreat. You’ll have an adventure that is unique to living in the wilderness of Alaska, and you’ll take home memories that will last a lifetime!

This has been probably the best vacation I have ever taken.

Our kayaks are super-stable, but we still have to wear our flotation vests.

What an awesome place you have. I can’t wait to bring my wife & kids here.

At Alderwood, all dining is family style in the main cabin.
