Beachcombing
Kodiak Island
is the second
largest island in the United States. Along with a warmer climate than
one might expect to find in Alaska, ocean currents from the South
Pacific and Asia also bring all sorts of treasures to our shores. Many
hours may be pleasantly spent gathering seashells, driftwood and buoys.
Who know what the Pacific will lay at your feet?
New in 2010,
as part of our voluntourism
program,
we encourage our guests to spend part or all of
one day of their visit giving something back to the environment by
participating in our Trash-N-Treasure project. We will take
the boat to our surrounding beaches and spend time cleaning up the
debri that washes ashore, from discarded or lost fishing nets/gear, to
plastic bottles, and everything in between. A picnic lunch or
barbeque on the beach gives us the chance to kick back and enjoy the
improvement in the already spectacular scenery, then the bundles of
waste will be carted back to the lodge for later transport to town for
proper disposal or recycling. Perhaps Neptune will reward
your efforts by presenting you with a precious trinket such as the
highly-coveted Japanese glass floats that used to be used on their
fishing nets!
