At
Alderwood Retreat, there's something for everyone. You can try a little
bit of everything or a whole lot of nothing...Just let us know what
you're interested in. We want your visit to be the trip of a lifetime
so if there is something you'd like to do that you don't see listed
here, just ask.
Family fun:
Alderwood
Retreat is an ideal place for your family to have an Alaskan adventure.
We can do something different every day: beachcombing, hiking,
kayaking, marine eco-tours, arts-n-crafts, and much more. There are
such a variety of activities to choose from that we can please every
member of the family, even the family pet!
Marine Tours:
The
bays and passes surrounding Alderwood are home to
sea otter,
porpoise, whales and an occasional harbor seal. At various times, five
different species of whales migrate past our cabin windows or feed in
the bay that is our front yard. A Kittiwake and Puffin rookery is only
minutes away by kayak.
Diving:
The
diving in Alaska is reputed to be some of the best in the whole
world... The cold water inhibits the growth of algae, so visibility is
often some of the best you'll ever experience.
Beachcombing:
The
coastline of Kodiak Island is exposed to the
Pacific Ocean, the
Shelikof Straits, and to ocean currents that originate in Japan. Many
treasures and strange creatures may be found while exploring these
stretches of black slate or granite covered beaches.
Kayaking:
Kayaking
is an activity enjoyed by guests of all ages and fitness levels. Our
super-stable recreational kayaks will make you feel right at home
within minutes. Then we can paddle to a nearby Kittiwake &
Puffin rookery, or pull in on a nearby beach for a picnic lunch.
Birdwatching:
There
are many feathered residents in our neighborhood: Bald Eagles,
Black-Capped Chickadees, Winter Wrens, Golden Crowned Sparrows, Pine
Grosbeaks, the Common Snipe, Pectoral Sandpipers, and more. You are
also likely to see Black Oystercatchers, Pelagic Cormorants, Tufted
Puffins, Kittiwakes, Glaucous-Winged & Herring Gulls,
Red-Necked Phalaropes, the Belted Kingfisher, Common Loon, and other
sea birds like Red-Breasted Mergansers or Harlequin Duck, depending on
the time of year.
Photography:
Kodiak
Island has an annual rainfall of +/- 70 inches. Combining that with
nearly twenty hours of daylight during our long summer days contributes
to the growth of lush vegetation at every turn; hence, the nickname:
"the Emerald Isle."
Air-N-Bear
Tours:
The
photos of a lifetime may be taken during the
flightseeing tours and
bear viewing trips offered by local air charter services. Walking
amongst Kodiak brown bear as they are fishing for salmon is something
you'll never forget! These trips are easily combined with your transport
out to the lodge.
Hiking:
There
are a limited number of hiking trails available,
ranging from old
roads to animal paths, for those who want to get some exercise in the
great outdoors.
Fishing:
World-class
fishing may still be found in the pristine waters around Kodiak Island.
Anglers can ply the waters of the mighty Pacific for Halibut, King
Salmon, or Coho with spinning gear provided by the lodge. Fly fishermen
may opt to take a class from an instructor &/or take a guided
or un-guided fly-out fishing trip to a local stream to catch Rainbow
Trout or Dolly Varden.
We're
always open to new ideas, so don't hesitate to send us your suggestions
about what we might add to make your trip the adventure vacation you've
always dreamed of!
